Lenexa Fire Station #5 (2010)
Lenexa, KS
New Construction
This fire station is the first LEED-certified building in Lenexa, proudly achieving LEED Silver status. Designed with sustainability at its core, the station features two spacious drive-through apparatus bays warmed efficiently by radiant heat. A variety of green initiatives have been incorporated, starting with a green roof that contributes to energy efficiency and stormwater management. The pervious concrete parking lot allows rainwater to filter through, reducing runoff and promoting groundwater recharge.
Inside, bamboo cabinets add an eco-friendly touch to the interior, while a rain garden enhances the natural landscape. A ground source heat pump provides energy-efficient heating and cooling throughout the building. Additionally, an on-site underground cistern captures stormwater runoff, which is then used for training exercises and testing fire truck pumps, ensuring water is recycled back into the system, minimizing waste.
